Well, the crew of the steamship abandoned ship, and I could've taken Hortense across the rocks again, but I didn't want to leave those bulls. Instead, I went to the helm of the steamship and got the paddlewheels turning. It wouldn't be long before the ship sank, but that chunk of Krakatoa was likely to bob back up. Fortunately, it did, so I more or less ran the steamship aground to save the livestock.
An engineer friend of mine whom I'd met up with earlier in this whole mad chase made his way across the water by the same rocks I'd used with Hortense and we jury-rigged a system to lower the paddlewheels so we could get back to shore two days later. Since the steamship had been abandoned, I claimed it and all its cargo--including the bulls--as my property. I went on to sell the bulls for ten times the original agreed-upon fee since the sultan of Djokja was very happy at how I'd foiled an attempt to trick him in the bull races. Those longhorns I sold him went on to be racing champions.
I still have the newspaper clipping from Java after all that: "Scottish Cowboy Pilots Grounded Steamship Into Port".
