A Long Night [PSL] (Tails/Judy) (Zootopia AU)

He'd had his friend Nick to thank for helping him get the job he had in the crime lab, working so close with him and the rest of the police force. And for introducing him to the girl he was now dating, Judy. Miles-- or Tails, as he preferred to be called - couldn't have imagined the life he now led, after being shunned by so many of his fellow foxes. Of course, he'd been friends with Nick for a long time, and was sometimes roped into whatever shenanigans he had in store. Having two tails wasn't really beneficial to him in any way, but it certainly earned him many unflattering titles and made him into an outcast.

Along with working close to the police force, as was normal with his line of work, he of course opted to work alongside Judy as much as he could, as together their brains and optimism was a powerful combo, even more so when Nick joined alongside them - they'd made a really powerful trio, and Judy and Tails, a powerful couple.

They had only been dating a month, but Tails felt close to Judy and tried to put her over himself as much as he could. This meant whenever there were tough cases that he knew she was having trouble with, he'd try to be there for her.

Tonight was no different, as he made his way to her office, two mugs of coffee in hand. He knocked on her door once, twice, three times softly, before opening the door and peeking in. "Judy?"

Of course, he couldn't even pretend that he was there for any other reason than the fact he knew she'd been cooped up in that room all day long. And his plan was simple - to distract her from her work and cheer her up as best he could.

Zootopia's first bunny cop was also one of its hardest working cops. In fact, she was so absorbed by police work that it tended to override everything else. She wanted to help, she wanted to serve and protect. Her reward was the satisfaction of a job well done. And when she was stuck on a difficult case, that just became something for her to focus on. She could solve any problem. Given enough time... Nick had already gone home for the night, but Judy wanted to spend a few more minutes poring over the case files.

Those few minutes quickly evolved into another hour, late into the evening, sitting at her desk, crime scene photos strewn about, witness testimonies scrawled over with pen as she looked for something, ANYTHING, she missed. She even started nibbling on the end of her carrot pen. She was so focused that she didn't hear the knock on the door, and only looked up when she heard her name. "Tails?" she asked. The fox from the crime lab... Nick introduced them. Thought they might hit it off. And they did. One month later and they were still dating, something Nick still enjoyed teasing them about. She wondered if he set them up just to give him something to razz her about...

Judy rubbed her eyes. "You're still here? I thought you'd gone home for the night," she said.

"I did. Nick told me you'd stayed over, and I came back to check up on you. It's late." Sure, it wasn't unusual for someone to stay late every once in a while, but he knew how much she got herself wrapped up in cases like this. And being alone the entire time probably wasn't helping much, either.

"Find anything new yet?" He offered one of the mugs of coffee to her, before sitting down near her and setting the other one beside him.

Judy sighed, giving him a weak smile as she took one of the cups from him. "Now I remember why I like you," she joked, taking a nice long sip of coffee. Her ears even perked up a little bit when she did, before flopping back down again. She shook her head and gestured to the papers before her. "Not yet... It's like the museum vandalized ITSELF! Security didn't pick up anything, the witnesses all say something different, everyone has an alibi... Someone's lying, but I can't figure out who."

She rubbed her temples with both hands. "I just need a little more time. I've overlooked something..."

He knew all too well what happens when you put your mind to something so much that it completely consumes you. It's what keeps him up all night tinkering on the next gadget, or trying to find that tiny huge breakthrough in whatever evidence he was studying. He had that problem almost as much as she seemed to.

And he almost told her his idea of what to do in this situation... but he stopped himself. Giving her a possible answer now, after so many hours, might actually be a really bad thing. What Judy obviously needed was a break from this, just long enough for her mind to settle.

He stood up again, and gently put a paw on her shoulder. "You're wearing yourself thin, Judy. You need to take a break, at least for a little while. That evidence isn't going anywhere, I promise. Here, let's sit down over here." Away from the evidence. He'd even try his best to block any view she'd have of it. "You've been working yourself to death on this case, and you might end up making a bad observation if you keep that up." A pause. "You know I know you're pretty much the best cop in the force, but even the best can make mistakes if they lose themselves. Set it aside, and let's talk for a while, yeah?"

"But I'm--" Judy tried to protest, only to have Tails cut her off, pulling her away from her desk. There was seating nearby, a simple bench that was more than big enough for the two of them to sit, and finding herself cut off from her work, Judy gave Tails a hesitant look. He was her boyfriend, he cared about her well being. Of course he did. She sighed, finding herself falling to the side, head against his shoulder. "I don't know how good a conversationalist I'll be, when I can hardly get my mind off of work!" she sighed in defeat. Nothing he said was wrong, after all.

"No no, I know. I get it. It's hard to get your mind off of something like this." He was patient, and he had his ways. "Heck, just doing what I do in my spare time is enough to get me so focused nobody can even get my attention." He chuckled a little. "But you already knew that, from every time you've tried. It's just too easy to lose yourself and not be able to get your mind off of a task."

A pause.

"And it's even worse when it's work-related, isn't it? I can't imagine how much tougher it is for you."

"No kidding," Judy found herself chuckling. "I seem to recall you almost missing a date because of your tinkering," she teased.

She let out a sigh, nuzzling his shoulder with the top of her head. "It is, yeah... I just hate leaving things undone. You understand that at least."

The fox couldn't help a small blush creep onto his cheeks. "Yeah... that was a very near thing."

He put one of his paws over hers reassuringly. "I definitely do. But it's never a bad thing to get away from it, just for a little while. After all..." He lightly booped her nose with his other paw. "...some of us wanna see you from time to time." He meant that lightheartedly, not intending it as any sort of bad thing - after all, the work she did and the job she had was extremely important, as was his. And he enjoyed the time he got with her. He was trying to be intentionally silly now.

"What, you don't think you see enough of me?" Judy asked, sounding mock indignant at his suggestion, poking at his chest. "I for one think we've been seeing a lot of each other in the last month," she teased with a small smirk. Nick's friendship sure rubbed off on her, making her more confident and bringing out a bit of a mischievous streak to her.

"Yes, well..." The poke caused that blush to not leave. One might think being friends with Nick for so many years would do the same to Tails. ... Well, it did sometimes. Admittedly, he couldn't always quite match up to Judy's energy. (Then again, she's a bunny and they have unbelievable amounts of it.)

"I suppose one could argue that there's no such thing as 'seeing you enough', either." He definitely tried to let his own small mischievous streak show, though.

"I suppose that's true," she agreed, smiling and leaning against him. He felt warm and soft... She liked it. It was hard to describe how much she loved being curled up with him, just listening to his heartbeat through his chest. Now that he'd pulled her away from her work, as much as her busy mind wanted to get right back to it, she was starting to realize just how mentally exhausted she was. "Mmm... So how did you plan to make me unwind, huh?" she asked curiously.

"Well, I thought we could talk, and... I didn't... really think this plan any further than that." Which was true - his intention to distract her to ease her troubled mind was working, but he realized that his plan was literally half-baked.

Taking her out of the room was a big no-no, considering he'd have to let her get back to it eventually. Even if that was the big thing he wanted to do.

Judy had to laugh a bit. That was so very Tails, she thought with amusement. "For being such a genius, you really need to get better about planning," Judy reminded him. He tries hard, and she admires him for it. "You're creative though. You've got your girlfriend here, after hours. You've currently got my undivided attention, unless you WANT me to get back to work," she suggested with a teasing voice.

"Hey, 'genius' doesn't mean I know everything," he teased right back. "You're right though." It's after hours, nobody's there, and even Tails isn't naive enough to deny that he knows what she's likely suggesting.

After a small enough pause to likely make her wonder if he's going to catch on, he pulls her closer to him, leans down and kisses her.

Judy melted into the kiss. She loved the feeling, and instinctively her arms went around his neck. She truthfully wasn't suggesting this. Heck, she was kinda hoping for a cuddle, a backrub, some sweet talk... But this felt way too good to deny. She moaned softly against his kiss, holding on tight as she leaned back into it. "You really ARE a genius," she cooed softly. "I've never done anything like this at work before..."

It probably wouldn't surprise her that the one who suggested this to him in the first place was Nick, then. Being rather bad with relationship stuff in general due to inexperience meant he had to rely on others that at least seemed like they knew what they were talking about.

"I try. And there's a first time for everything." At the least she was definitely getting the cuddling, as he held her close to him. Granted, his face was still a bit heated as he wasn't sure this would go over as well as it did, but he relaxed some as he continued to kiss her.

The stacks of paper on her desk were little more than a twinge in the back of her mind as she found herself on her back on the bench, Tails over her as they kissed. She held on to him tightly, like a big stuffed fox she wanted to hug the stuffing out of, and closed her eyes to enjoy herself. If making out in her office was Nick's idea, and she found out about it, the sly fox was going to get an earful from Judy, or thanks. She hadn't decided which yet. "Well, you know the saying," she cooed in his ear. "Try everything!"

Well, in time he was sure they'd be able to do just that. Just maybe not 'everything' tonight. Still, he was very much enjoying himself and he was going to definitely thank Nick for the suggestion later.

Time seemed to slip away as they continued their activity, and Tails found himself lost in the kissing. It felt really nice being close to her like this, and being intimate. Just the two of them, the quiet office, and nothing else.

It was amazing how you could lose track of time in the middle of something as pleasant as this. The room was quiet save for the pleased sounds they made, and Judy hugged him close, fingers brushing through his fur on his neck and head. He was so nice and soft. Whatever else happened, this was a great way to take her mind off of her work. She almost didn't want to say anything for fear of ending it! It felt strange to admit that, lying on her back on the bench with her boyfriend over her. Even a year ago she never thought this would be something she'd long for.
